Reading (in) a Quadriform Cosmos: Gospel Books in the Early Christian Bibliographic Imagination

Early Christian thinkers developed the widespread linguistic cosmology of Roman Mediterranean in a novel way order to advance specific bibliographic project: aligning emergent fourfold Gospel with structure physical cosmos. Employing interlocking concepts from disciplines meteorology, geography, music, mathematics, and astronomy, number figures—including Irenaeus, Origen, Ephrem, Eusebius, Fortunatianus, Augustine, Maximus—imagined corpus consisting precisely four texts.
